It’s a sad day….

While we are Raptors-centric here at AltRaps, there comes a time where we have to step outside the box. Today we are being dragged out of that box kicking and screaming.

In a few months it could be decided that Seattle has lost their franchise and possibly under dubious conditions. If this happens, it makes it hurt even more that the very last game of the regular season features Seattle on the road at Golden State.

The long time members of AltRaps don’t agree on many things, but we do agree that, as fans of this game, board room antics often take away the from the fun and passion on the court. The Seattle situation seems to boil down to corporate desire more than the indifference of a fan base, and that is just wrong.

EDIT:  A great idea.  To that end, all Raptors fans, please feel free to call, write, or fax:

  1. Thank you, guys, for helping out. You may have crushed my Heat two nights ago, but I forgive you! Thanks for being so classy.

  2. Crushed? You must have missed the first 3 quarters where the Heat were making us look like the Washington Generals.

Keep the golf clubs warm…our guys will be picking them up in about a week.

  4. My brother lives in Victoria, so I sent him to a Sonics game for his birthday.

Those dudes in their sales office were hustling so hard for sales. Holy cow.

Step 1–I buy my tickets in the nosebleeds b/c I am not made of money.
Step 2–Sonics call to give me one of two pairs in the EIGHTH ROW BASELINE PRIME for games over Christmas.
Step 3–My brother and I wail about him being home for Christmas and therefore unable to go.
Step 4–I call the Sonics people and tell them we can’t go. They ask if we know anyone in the area. I tell them where we live. They sound bummed. We suggest they donate them to charity in our names.
Step 5–Sonics call to offer me free tickets to two games in April if I will buy two more pairs. I explain about the location and how expensive it is for him to get to Seattle. Sonics stop calling.

If the team moves, it won’t be because their staff didn’t do everything they could to make it viable in Seattle.

  5. it is sad, the sonics were a bad ass team when they had payton and hawkins in the back court, and recently with allen and lewis. too bad too, they have a few gems in durrant, green and wilcox.

  6. Scott, thanks so much for keeping this in the news. As an American living in Canada (Vancouver), I appreciate you taking time away from watching the Stanley Cup playoffs to give us some words of encouragement. It’s good to know that while people out west have little or no interest in the NBA, back East seems to be a different story.

  13. I’m not sure if anybody saw this, but Bennett’s beating down his beloved Okies, too. He’s demanding the Oklahoma legislature pass what’s basically supposed to be a payroll rebate to encourage out-of-state companies to relocate — something the Sonics would currently not qualify for, but would save him another $4 million if it passes.

I understand why the owners voted the way they did. The NBA may be a player’s game, but David Stern is an owner’s commish, and all of them want to preserve the freedom to fuck over their hometown fans the same way the Sonics are. I understand it, but Mark Cuban is once again my hero for having the cojones to tell them all to fuck off. If I know his PR-starved ego, he’ll probably have a post explaining it on blogmaverick.com in a few.
