“We like our team. We like where we are.”

6 games above .500…yup, you should like that, Liar.

This quote from Bryan Colangelo says it all, folks.

Pathetic in every way.

  1. I have to agree with this actually. I don’t think any GM could possibly be happy with where they are. There’s always room for improvement.

  2. LOL. I’ll look on the bright side and say that we’re not as bad off as we look. :)

We got parts we can build around/trade.

Don’t we get cap relief when Rasho goes off the books year after next? His contract could be valuable next year.

BTW, say Boston and Detroit start showing their age in 2 seasons, do you have any predictions on who will start replacing them as top contenders in the East to go with (maybe) Cleveland (if yessterdays trades don’t screw ‘em) and Orlando (I’m still not sold on Atlanta)?

  3. I think Grange made a good point about the need to position for next year, when Colangelo has more room to be creative.

  4. SiC: after boston and detroit decline, the east powerhouses will be miami, toronto, cleveland, orlando and atlanta.

i personally think boston and detroit have 3 more years in them before they start to decline. their stars are in great shape.

  5. So, we have $12mil off the books (I think) next year. This will be before having to adjust to Jose’s new contract and, possibly, Delfino’s. So, let’s say we drop it to, what, $9? So, what does $9mil a year get you? Jason Kapono’s brother? And, whomever you bring in, do you bring someone in with a lengthy deal, bearing in mind you have to re-sign Bosh, Bargs, Ford in the following years?

I still contend that one of your big 4 (throwing Jose in there) will have to go. Your big 4 have shown thus far that they cannot take you to the next level with a minimal supporting cast.

If they do face a “weaker” team in the playoffs and get knocked out in the first round, we MUST look long term.

If they survive the first and do okay in the second, then you might have wiggle room depending on who it is stepping up.

  6. Raps Fan > true, 3 years isn’t improbable, given the shape they are in.

sdp04 > I agree, the big “4″, could be trimmed down, and as Raps Fan said loooong time ago, there is no one on the Raps that is untradeable, given the opportunity.

To be honest with you guys (any gals?), I thought we would get within spitting distance of the playoffs last year (w/c would have given the fans just a good dose of optimist), make the play offs this year (bowing out in the 1st rnd), and contending for a top seed next year, so I can still afford to be positive ($@## knows I can’t watch the other game in town now).

  7. I’m not sure the whole thing boils down to being optimistic or not. Given the current roster, are we a playoff team? Yes. Given the current roster, are we turning into the Maple Leafs without skates? Yes.

I didn’t want, nor expect, BC to blow the thing up this year. I’m all for giving people time to grow. My whole argument is if you publicly acknowledge your weakness and then do nothing to rectify it, why should we jump on board? Further, you have now extended contracts and signed free agents that further handcuff any movement, as was proven this week when it was evident we had nothing moveable that anybody else wanted. Personally, I’d rather have 14 guys on my roster and more cap room to use than just fill it up for the sake of filling it up.

The only other “optimism” I question is the fact that many seem happy with where we are, which is 6 games above .500 in a brutal conference. Sure, it’s good enough for fourth, but I refuse to think that Orlando and Cleveland were that much better than the Raptors. If you, as management, think they are, then make moves. If they aren’t, and they are still ahead of you, make moves that address your weaknesses, don’t just sign a 3pt shooter because he is available as a free agent. In times like this, as defending division champions, I think you make moves that address a position, not just “the best guy out there”.

  8. sdp04 > I agree with you on almost everything, I don’t however, believe we’re Leafs Jr.–yet.

If by this time next year we don’t look like we’re contending for @ least elite status in the East, then dude, I’ll go with you to TO, and brandish a LIAR sign with you :) (I’ll throw in beer and a street dog). err, Sprite Zone ok?

  9. Well, I’ll win that bet unless BC moves some pieces this offseason or early on in the next.

I made comments last season in our forums that this past summer would prove interesting and look where it has us. The same can be said about the summer of 2009. That could be (will be?) the make and break of any hope we have to make a run in the Bosh era. We could have some cap space or new bodies via trade. What happens that summer will show Bosh where we sit going into his decision making years. More importantly, it will show the fans where BC sees this team going.
