“Watching these guys thoroughly enjoy themselves, and making play dates for each other, to go out and have dinner and
hang out and do things,” Mitchell said. “That was a good thing for me.”
For Parker, it was sitting on a patio in Venice on a perfect afternoon, eating gelato and gabbing with the guys.
“We were just chilling out there,” Parker said. “It was just a beautiful day, and it is the downtime, when we are all together, and laughing and joking.”
And singing, like they did a few nights ago at a trendy and tasty restaurant in Madrid. Jose Calderon, the Raptors point guard, wanted his friends –he always refers to his teammates as his friends — to sample some authentic Spanish cuisine. He arranged for a tasting menu. As the dinner progressed the players struck up a chorus of “Ole! Ole! Ole!” Except the Raptors sang “Jose! Jose! Jose!”
“That was it for me,” backup guard Darrick Martin said. “There were other people in the restaurant, and they were looking at us, and then they started clapping a little bit, too. It was family.”
