judging by the turnout at the Raptors’ pre-season game against local heroes Lottomatica, the introduction of an NBA team in the Eternal City seems as far-fetched as the banning of, say, pasta with pepper and cheese or public necking, both of which are indulged in with zest on local sidewalks. Last night there were large blocks of empty seats at Palalottomatica, where the announced crowd was 9,823. And if that sounds to you like evidence of a city that can’t wait to be colonized by the NBA game, note that one of the two resident big-time soccer teams, Lazio, was simultaneously playing to a packed house at the 80,000-seat stadium it shares with AS Roma.
